“The Darwinian beekeeper works with the bees to allow the bees to be bees.”

Darwinian beekeeping, is an innovative approach to apiculture, that focuses on replicating natural conditions for honey bee colonies. This method, championed by Cornell professor Tom Seeley, advocates for practices that align more closely with the bees’ native environments. Cornell professor Tom Seeley explains Darwinian beekeeping.
Since 2019, I’ve been developing a bee-friendly, Darwinian-style hive in Heerlen, Zuid-Limburg, The Netherlands. This design is tailored to European weather conditions, closely mimicking bees’ natural habitats. Currently, I am testing a prototype with a colony of native European dark bees.
In 2024, I began research in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa, where I am observing East African lowland bees in their natural habitat.
I aim to design a Darwinian-style bee nest adapted to the Southern African climate by 2025. However, extensive research and testing are still required to achieve this. Especially with the East African and Cape Honey bees.
I am a certified beekeeper, holding a diploma from the Flemish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Belgium.
